Everything We Create Is Linked To Other's Creations

Have you ever come across the term Ekphrasis?

Even if you haven’t, you’ve certainly experienced it.

Ekphrasis is a Greek term meaning 'words inspired by images'.

I love this expanded definition by Jennifer Selig, PhD:

Any artistic creation inspired by another art form, either directly or indirectly.

But I forego sleep thinking about this stuff and believe the definition should be expanded further. Here’s my take…

Ekphrasis: Any form of inspiration derived from artistic creation.

For example:

What was the last song that inspired you to dance, sing, or air-drum (I know you're out there) to?

What inspired the people who created that song?

Other songs? A book, poem, painting? Perhaps the additive experience of all the art they were inspired by?

And what inspired the inspiration? And the one before?

Creation is a connection. A fine filigree chain (I'm fancy) connecting us all.

To create is to connect.

Take a moment (indulge me, thanks).

Close your eyes, think of something you’ve created that you love.

Place your thoughts with all the emotions that come from Ekphratic connection.

What did you feel?

If you didn’t feel anything, I’m afraid you weren’t in it. Which is ok, just try again. Awareness takes practice. But try. Try.

Did you try again?

What did you feel?

Joy, release, pleasure, excitement. Hope?

Y’know, just the little things that give our lives meaning.

So, remember the next time you create, you’re adding a link to the chain which connects us all.

My wish is that you choose to rattle it often.

What's something you've created that's connected you to other people?
